Making A Difference

One early morning a man was walking along a beach, when he noticed a figure in the distance on the shore. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a boy, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “what are you doing?”
The boy replied, “I’m throwing starfish back into the ocean, because the sun is coming up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in now, they will die.”
The man replied, “Don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beaches and thousands of starfish? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
After listening, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it into the back into the ocean. Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”
